SUMMARY
(continued)
A
series of CRS-choreographed pranks take a toll on Van Orton's
rigid life. Strangers discuss CRS and the game in hushed
tones at his athletic club, a CRS pen bleeds blue ink on
to his dress shirt, and he's humiliated during a crucial
meeting with Anson Baer (Armin Mueller-Stahl) when he's
unable to open the locks on his briefcase.
His
life takes a turn toward the surreal after he meets an attractive,
down-on-her luck waitress (Deborah Kara Unger) and the CRS
pranks become life threatening.
After
he's stripped of financial resources and convinced that
he can trust no one, Van Orton begins to wonder if CRS is
a front for a more covert operation, and if the game is
in fact an attempt to steal his fortune and leave him for
dead. Determined to fight back alone, Nicholas infiltrates
CRS
in order to "pull back the curtain and meet the wizard."
The
Game marks David Fincher's follow-up to his dark and atmospheric
crime thriller Seven (1997). The film's stunning cinematography
and ominous tone solidify Fincher's reputation as a visionary,
groundbreaking director in the tradition of Stanley Kubrick
and Ridley Scott. Michael Douglas excels as the detached
investment banker whose life is stripped away, piece by
piece, before his own eyes. And Debra Kara Unger sizzles
as the enigmatic waitress who may hold all of the answers.
